First Dollar given to The Canvas Shop

Writer's picture: STCSTC

Residents may have noticed the light on at night at 214 Oak Street and have been curious as to what was going on. The answer – sewing.

The front portion of the former Barnes Hotel is now home to The Canvas Shop, owned by Doug and Kathy Armstrong. The Canvas Shop does a wide range of commercial sewing, including: boats seats and boat tops, car interiors, ATV and snowmobile seats, and they can make custom covers for just about anything.

Doug has been sewing since he was 16 years old, assisting with the family business in the Algonac/St. Clair Shores area downstate, then relocating to Manistique 30 years ago.

Doug and Kathy are full time employees at Jack’s Fresh Market and work at The Canvas Shop after hours. The shop is open and run by their son, Tom, on weekdays from 1-5 p.m.

The couple’s son, Ron, purchased the building several years ago.

Contact Doug with questions or inquire on a project at (906) 286-4404.
