Jim Harmes, interim director of the Schoolcraft Tourism and Commerce, recently presented a “first dollar” certificate to Escanaba residents Kay and Frank Lotter. The Lotters are the new owners of the BP gas and convenience stores in Manistique.
The Lotters own 14 gas stations throughout Wisconsin and Michigan.
The four in the Upper Peninsula include two in Manistique, as well as one in Gladstone and Newberry.
Frank “grew up” in a gas station in Wisconsin. He said his dad would take him and his sister to work at his gas station where his dad pumped gas for all of the customers.
Frank noted that he has pumped a lot of gas in his life.
Future plans include serving food in the former Arby’s at the Lakeshore BP. They hope to have a “soft” opening around Memorial Day.
Asked what they would want Manistique residents to know about them, they pointed to the logo on their shirts, “It’s a good day to have a good day.”
